I’ve always had a thing for the Wizard of Oz.
As a child, I was inspired by Dorothy. In her I saw a courageous young girl who faced some scary obstacles and persevered. She managed to see the best in others, she was a fiercely loyal friend, she loved her dog, and she trusted in her journey. Along the way, she discovered her own inner power and strength – not a bad role model for me! As an adult, I fell in love with the story all over again, captivated by the layers of meaning about the universal human longing to find our way ‘home.’
As a professional communicator and storyteller, I can’t help but appreciate the way that Dorothy and her ruby slippers illustrate the power of story to transcend time, culture and language. Frank Baum’s book has been translated into more than 22 languages, and MGM’s technicolor version, The Wizard of Oz, is the most-watched movie that Hollywood has every produced.
I hope the power of this story inspires you to share your own!
